North Island, Seychelles

Development Resort
In 2003, North Island was bought by Wilderness Safaris, a eco tourism company based in South Africa. They intend to return the island to the former pristine state it would have been in before human settlers arrived. Left behind after the island fell into disuse was many species unwanted animals and plants, including pigs, rats, coconuts, casuarina, cows, Indian Mynah birds, cats and a very intrusive weed called latana.
The current conservation project aims to eradicate these unwanted items, and re-introduce Seychelles natural flora & fauna, including giant tortoise and certain species bird, as well as indigenous trees such as takamaka, badamier and the famous coco-de-mer palm. The island also has a turtle nest monitoring programme in place.
