Fort De Roovere Bridge, West Brabant Water Line, Netherlands

During the reconstruction of Fort De Roover in Netherlands, the architects from Ro&Ad Architecten were faced with a unique problem. The original fort was surrounded by a moat, but in order for tourists to visit the fort, they needed a way of crossing the moat. A logical solution would be to build a bridge over the moat. Fortunately for all of us, the usual elevated bridge would negatively affect the original fort’s design so the architect’s had to think of something totally new.
The architects came up with an ingenious solution: they built the bridge through the moat, not over it. This ingenious design met the original requirements in that it provides access to the fort and does not hinder the view. However, the structure is so novel that I suspect it will become a tourist attraction in and of itself.
