Winters in London are chilly, but rarely below freezing, with daytime highs around 5 °C (41 °F) – 8 °C (46 °F), while spring has mild days and cool evenings. The lowest ever recorded temperature was −21.1 °C (−6 °F) in January 1795. Autumn is usually mild but often unsettled as colder air from the arctic and warmer air from the tropics meet. Tornados are rare, but the Kensal Green area of the city was hit by the 2006 London tornado causing £10 million of damage and injuring 6 people.
